About Thomas Pitfield

Thomas Pitfield (1903-1999) was a prolific, largely self-taught composer, an admired artist and engraver, a poet, a skilled furniture maker as well as being a keen ornithologist. He was a much-loved composition teacher at the Royal Manchester College of Music, serving there from 1947 onwards. His music is full of charm, wit, and memorable inventiveness. He was a modest man, shy and unassuming, but immensely gifted, and hugely encouraging to all his pupils.
